Digital Foundry's Extended Look Analysis: GTA 6 at 1440p and 30fps on PS5, 60fps Seen as Out of Reach

Digital Foundry's technical breakdown of the Extended Look footage found GTA 6 rendering at approximately 1440p natively on a base PS5, holding 30fps stably. A 60fps mode is described as extremely unlikely, with NPC simulation placing the bottleneck on the CPU rather than the GPU.

The Extended Look premiered on a base PS5 by Rockstar's own specification, and Digital Foundry's breakdown of the footage put specific numbers to what that means. GTA BOOM reported on August 29 that Digital Foundry's analysis found the game rendering at approximately 1440p without dynamic resolution scaling, holding its 30fps target stably with only occasional brief dips. The visual ambition drew recognition from within the studio itself: Push Square's coverage of the same analysis reports that Digital Foundry editors Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter described the game as the most impressive example of real-time rendering the studio has seen and singular across the entire console generation.

The 30fps figure is consistent with what Rob Nelson told TGG in July, but the Digital Foundry breakdown adds something the preview coverage did not: an explanation of why 60fps is unlikely to arrive. GTA BOOM reported that Digital Foundry found a 60fps mode on console extremely unlikely, with the bottleneck sitting on the CPU rather than the GPU. The constraint is NPC simulation. The NPCs in the Extended Look track the player's face, clothes and vehicle for the wanted system, follow individual daily routines, and react to crimes as witnesses and to law enforcement as participants. Running that simulation at twice the frame rate would require CPU headroom that current console hardware cannot provide without a significant reduction in simulation fidelity.

The absence of temporal upscaling adds to the picture. Pure Xbox's coverage of the analysis found no strong evidence of FSR 2, TAA upscaling, or similar modern temporal reconstruction in the footage, which would mean the 1440p figure reflects a native render. Most current-generation titles at comparable visual complexity rely on reconstruction to reach their resolution targets; GTA 6 appears to be trading that efficiency for the simulation depth underlying the NPC and wanted systems. Whether a PC release offers a higher frame rate option, and whether a PS5 Pro build differs in resolution or stability, remains unconfirmed.
