Anyone who buys a physical PS5 copy in Japan and has not redeemed the code by that date loses it. Xbox codes sold in Japan are not subject to the same restriction. Kotaku, Push Square, TechSpot, and TweakTown all picked the detail up on July 26 and 27.
Rockstar says only 'regional regulations' and does not name the law, or explain why PS5 is affected and Xbox is not. The explanation circulating among people who follow the Japanese market is the Payment Services Act, which treats download codes as prepaid payment instruments and attaches registration and deposit obligations to codes that stay valid beyond six months. A 170-day window sits just under that threshold. Treat that as the likely reason rather than a confirmed one, but it fits the pattern: Japanese releases across many platforms have shipped codes with expiry dates for years. What is unusual here is the scale of the purchase involved and the format already causing friction. A retail box at full price, containing a code that has an expiry date on the insert, is a harder sell than a standard disc.
For most buyers the window is wide enough. Someone who picks up a copy at launch and redeems the code in the first few months will be fine. The real risk sits with collectors holding sealed boxes, gift copies bought well ahead of time, and anyone who sets the game aside long enough to forget. The code-in-box debate has been building since pre-orders opened in June, with specialist retailers in North America, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming among them, already refusing to stock GTA 6 over the format.
