The Rockstar Game Workers Union, the self-organized group of studio staff seeking formal recognition at the company that makes GTA 6, held its first meeting with Rockstar management on July 22. The union called the meeting a step in the right direction and said it produced what it described as a roadmap for a faster negotiation process. GamesRadar, GTA BOOM, PC Guide, Sportskeeda, and God Is A Geek all reported on the meeting after the union's statement went out.
The union brought five proposals to the table: an end to crunch, pay transparency, flexible working, a commitment that AI will not replace workers, and a commitment against layoffs. The crunch demand follows directly from what three anonymous members told Game Developer earlier this month, that Rockstar builds an opt-out of UK Working Time Regulations into standard employee contracts by default, making extended hours the norm unless a worker specifically requests to be covered by the law.
Rockstar has not formally recognized the union. The agreed next step is defining the bargaining unit, which determines which employees the union could represent in negotiations. That scoping work comes before any recognition agreement can be reached. If Rockstar does not grant voluntary recognition after that stage, the union has said it will pursue statutory recognition through the UK's Central Arbitration Committee, a legal route that can compel recognition when a sufficient majority of eligible workers within the defined unit are members. The meeting came four months before GTA 6 launches on November 19.
