NPC Interaction

Red Dead Redemption 2's interaction system returns and goes further. Hold the left trigger near a person or an animal and a set of context options appears, so Jason and Lucia can greet, taunt, provoke or defuse the people around them, and pet or scold a dog.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has framed this as the system GTA 6 pushes hardest. Rockstar pushed NPC interaction as far as it could in Red Dead Redemption 2, Nelson said, and GTA 6 is taking it much further, with the system returning and evolved. In practice it works the way Red Dead's did: hold the left trigger while near someone and a short list of context options appears, chosen with the stick rather than dug out of a menu.

Vice's breakdown of the Extended Look lists four things players can do to a stranger: greet, taunt, provoke, or defuse. The last of those matters, because it means an encounter that turns hostile is not automatically a fight. It extends to animals as well. The footage showed Jason with a dog in what appears to be a drug house, with the options to praise, scold, pet or study it, and the Criminal Profile system scores small decencies like feeding one of Leonida's animals.

The reactive half is what separates it from a prompt list. Standing too close to a group registers as eavesdropping and the group notices. Following someone for too long makes them uncomfortable, and they can turn and confront the player. The scale behind it is Rockstar's own number: Nelson put GTA 6 at roughly 600,000 hand-animated NPC animations against about 55,000 in GTA 5, with a dedicated team working on NPC behaviour. Whether interactions carry lasting consequences with specific NPCs, and how the system behaves during missions rather than in free roam, are unconfirmed.
