GTA 6's default sprint input is L3, a click of the left thumbstick, rather than the repeated button taps that have been GTA's convention since at least GTA 3. MikeShowSha, a streamer who attended Rockstar's preview and reported two hours of hands-on time, described the change in a video after the August 27 2026 embargo lifted; Vice, TheGamer, and Push Square all reported it from his account. Rockstar has not published its own controls list, so the input comes from a preview attendee rather than an official statement. L3 sprint is the standard across most modern third-person action games, and GTA 6 appears to be falling in line with that convention.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both used repeated taps of X on PlayStation and A on Xbox as the default sprint input. Players could remap buttons in both games, but L3 was not the out-of-the-box option. GTA 6 makes L3 the default. Rockstar has not confirmed whether a classic control preset will be available for players who prefer the older face-button layout, and no preview coverage has settled that question.
