Rockstar Puts Numbers on GTA 6: an 80 Hour Story, Twice GTA 5's Map, and 30 FPS on Console

The creator previews that unlocked alongside the Extended Look carry the first hard figures for GTA 6, most of them from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. The map is roughly twice GTA 5's, his own playthrough ran about 80 hours, consoles target 30 fps at launch, and there is no full first-person mode on day one.

The Extended Look was one half of August 27. The other was a set of hands-off previews recorded at Rockstar North in July, whose embargo lifted at the same time, and those carry the numbers. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told YouTuber TGG the map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, with Vice City alone about twice the size of Los Santos. Kotaku reported the same figures from TGG's account. Vice City and its surrounding suburbs are put at eleven times the size of Los Santos and its surroundings. Separately, Rockstar claims more than 600,000 NPC animations against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, with NPCs art directed individually rather than assembled procedurally.

Nelson told The New York Times his own recent playthrough took about 80 hours, covering the main story plus optional objectives that carry narrative consequences, so that is neither the critical path alone nor a completionist run. The campaign is structured in chapters, the way Red Dead Redemption 2 was. Two answers land harder than the rest. Speaking to Davy Jones, Nelson said there is no full first-person mode at launch, because the team put its effort into third-person animation; first-person aiming is in for some weapons. And 30 fps is Rockstar's console target at launch, which TechSpot reports from Jones seeing the base PS5 build running at that frame rate.

The frame rate answer is the one worth sitting with. It closes a question this site's hardware guides have carried since June, and it lands the same day Rockstar confirmed the Extended Look itself was captured on a base PS5 rather than a Pro. All of the above comes from Rockstar staff speaking to creators and to the New York Times during a curated preview event rather than from a Newswire post, so treat it as attributed rather than published: the figures are Rockstar's own, but Rockstar has not put its name to a spec sheet. November 19 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S is unchanged.
