Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick Says the GTA 6 Extended Look Was Partly a Tutorial

At a GamesBeat Insider fireside chat in New York on September 16, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described the GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix as partly instructional, reasoning that players need to understand how a game plays before they commit to buying it. His broader point: awareness and enthusiasm are not the same problem, and the whole campaign exists to close the gap between them.

Strauss Zelnick sat with GamesBeat at a GamesBeat Insider fireside chat in New York on September 16 and laid out the case for why GTA 6, a game that needs no introduction, still receives a full marketing push. His framing: awareness and enthusiasm are different problems. "The whole goal that we always have, whether it's this upcoming launch or any other title, is to take awareness and turn it into excitement," he said.

The Extended Look, in Zelnick's telling, was built to close that gap in a specific way. "With interactive entertainment, you have to engage with the title in order to enjoy the title," he said. Zelnick said "there was an element of tutorial baked in there, right?" His point was that the Netflix presentation was built partly to show people how the game plays before they decide whether to buy.

He was also blunt about the limits of marketing. "You can't game the system. We cannot convince people something that's bad is good," he said. He compared the approach to the Barbie film, a property with enormous name recognition that still needed sustained promotion to become a cultural event. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
