Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez issued a joint statement on September 3 opposing the proposed Vice City marketing partnership with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. The statement was originally reported by the Miami Herald and was covered by Kotaku and Insider Gaming on September 4. In it, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz wrote: "Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity. Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office work every single day to prevent." Commissioner Bermudez added: "Miami-Dade County has spent decades building a reputation as a world-class destination for tourism, business, investment, and opportunity. We should be promoting the Miami-Dade we have worked so hard to build, not a fictional version of our community defined by crime and violence."
Miami-Dade Chief Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan separately wrote to county Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on September 3 requesting that all courthouse facilities be excluded from any GTA 6 promotional activities, NBC Miami reported. County Clerk Juan Fernandez-Barquin also stated opposition to the proposal in the same report.
No formal agreement between Miami-Dade County and Rockstar Games has been announced. The proposal originated from the county side, with local officials floating the idea of tying regional tourism promotion to the game's real-world Miami-Dade setting. WLRN reported that the proposals have not come before the county commission at any public meeting, and that Bermudez said he would vote no if they do and that residents should get a say first. The joint statement and the Chief Judge's separate letter mark the first formal public opposition on the record from elected and appointed county officials. GTA 6 remains scheduled for November 19, 2026.
