Smell Reactions
GTA 6 has a system that makes characters react to unpleasant smells. Edge Issue 430 says it began as one reaction for a single piece of content and was widened so other locations can provoke varying degrees of disgust.
Edge Issue 430, published October 29 2026, says the team originally created a character reaction to an unpleasant smell for one piece of explorable content, then turned it into a broader system 'allowing other locations to provoke varying degrees of disgust.' The example comes from Aaron Garbut, a head of development and co-studio head, who wandered into a house with affectionate family photographs of a dog, then found a room where the dog had trashed the place. 'There was shit in the corner, smeared around a bit,' he told Edge.
Edge also describes the same system firing in its own demo: when Jason entered a filthy house, he began to grimace and recoil without any bespoke scene having been written for it.
Whether smell affects stealth or NPC behavior, and what else in Leonida can trigger it, are unconfirmed until launch.
