Manatees are confirmed for GTA 6 by Game Informer Issue 382, which names them among Leonida's 170-plus animal species. Rockstar also uses one as a cartoon character: Chunkee the Manatee appears on official merchandise.
Game Informer Issue 382, published digitally on September 29 2026, names manatees in its rundown of Leonida's wildlife, alongside flamingos, pelicans and alligators. Vice's summary of the feature carries the same list. That is the first confirmation of the animal as living wildlife in the game.
The species had already shown up in Leonida's fiction. Chunkee the Manatee is an officially named character, printed on a shot glass in the Goodtime State Vice City Collection that Rockstar put on sale on September 24 2026 and on the canvas bag in the creator care packages sent out around September 30, next to Macca the Gator.
The real animal explains the choice. The Florida manatee is a slow, plant-eating marine mammal found in the state's warm coastal water, rivers and springs, and it is one of Florida's best known protected species. Where manatees live in Leonida, whether the player can swim with them, and whether harming one carries any consequence are unconfirmed until launch.
