The first confirmed count of Leonida's animal population comes from Game Informer Issue 382, published September 29 2026. The feature puts the total at over 170 species, with more than 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals in the breakdown. Push Square and exputer both reported the figures the same day. Named land and freshwater species include flamingos, pelicans, manatees, alligators, iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, armadillos, and rhesus macaques. Marine species named include sharks, whales, rays, turtles, and jellyfish. Animals can be iridescent, translucent, or bioluminescent, and new fur systems let coats get wet, dirty, matted, or clumped.

Earlier Rockstar footage established wildlife as a visible part of the open world: Trailer 1 shows an alligator and flamingos, and the Extended Look on August 27 2026 shows dolphins. The 170-species total and the species breakdown are the first confirmed figures for the scope of the system. Dexerto reports that some animals fall into Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary categories, which Rockstar is keeping under wraps for now. Animals can also be examined and recorded in the Wildlife Log. Whether hunting is a mechanic is not stated in the coverage, and what role individual species play in missions or free roam is unconfirmed until launch.
